National Lefty Day: Top 5 Southpaws
Quote for Today: “Two and a half thousand left-handed people are killed every year using things made for right-handed people.” Maggie O’Farrell
Today is National Left-handers Day. Myself being a lefty growing up in the early 60‘s-70‘s, I understand how difficult being abby-normal is. Searching day in and day out for that one pair of little lefty scissors in Kindergarten was awful. Trekking all across the Southeast for the elusive first baseman mitt stunk. And enduring the agonizing looks from 3rd grade teachers trying to teach me cursive writing made me nauseous. Luckily, my Grandfather was a lefty and so no one in my family forced me to change.
Lefty’s today have it much easier. Being a chef, I obviously use knives. But, these days, you can buy a left-handed knife that’s left side has a beveled cut and a right side with the hollow ground. I don’t think I really need one of these, every knife I have ever purchased looked symmetrical to me. I am also quite sure that a left-handed can opener would confuse me. Just looking at a left-handed spiral bound notebook gives me bad flashbacks. But enough of my complaints, here is my top five list of favorite left-handers.
5) Sir Paul McCartney – One word “Beatles”
4) Robert De Niro – My Favorite Actor
Robert De Niro
3) John McEnroe – Surgeon with a wooden racket.
2) Paul Prudhomme – The man who took Cajun far beyond the Bayou.
1) Bill Bradley – Rhodes Scholar, Basketball Star and U.S. Senator that looked at home on both the cover of Sports Illustrated and Time Magazine.
I would have included myself on the list, but I am too modest. TJ
