The Scoop on Celebrating Cinco de Mayo 2017

5th of May, Cinco de Mayo 2017, Roadtrips R Us, Travel & Food BlogCinco de Mayo 2017

It’s time to plan a Cinco de Mayo party. This May celebration pays homage to the Mexican victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This, however, didn’t mark the end of the Franco-Mexican War as the French didn’t pull out until 1867. Many American’s confuse this date with Mexican Independence although that day had passed some 50 years earlier on September 16th. Though a somewhat minor holiday south of the border, in the U.S. it’s a great excuse to enjoy some great Latin food along with a few Cerveza’s and maybe a Tequila or two.

Some of the biggest celebrations in the U.S. occur in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. Down South here in Atlanta there will also be plenty of folks hitting the town to start the weekend early. If you don’t mind the crowds, here are a few places to go.

The original El Taco in Virginia Highlands, Escorpion Tequila Bar on Peachtree Street, Agave Restaurant downtown on Boulevard or If you want to stay on the North-side of town, there’s Eclipse Di Luna on Ashford Dunwoody and HOLA! Taqueria & Bar in Roswell.

If dodging elbows and sombreros is not your style, why not create your own Cinco de Mayo feast at home. Take the time to find a Latin grocery store or Carniceria in your area. They’ll more than likely have beef, pork, and chicken already cut, marinated and ready to cook. Of course, they will have fresh corn tortillas, produce, various condiments and lots of Cilantro to go with it. Ask the guy at the butcher counter if they have any homemade salsas, I have a sneaky suspicion they will.

CJ and I pick up our provisions at the Super Mercado Jalisco on Alpharetta Highway. Their food is always fresh and they have Salsa Verde and a red salsa best described as Pico de Gallo on roids that keep us coming back.

We hope you have a safe and fun Cinco de Mayo. Here’s what our spread looked like in 2016 for under twenty bucks.
