Vincent: It costs five dollars?
Mia: Yep
Vincent: You don’t put bourbon in it or anything?
Waiter: Nope

A 1885 British newspaper describes the milkshake as a manly drink composed of whiskey, ice cream, and milk. For the next thirty-seven years, milkshakes were associated with bars, tavern, and inns. It was not until 1922 that Woolworth’s starting selling what we know today as a milkshake in Chicago.

The man responsible for this was Ivar “Pop” Caulson who simply added scoops of ice cream to an old fashioned malted milk. Even though people had been drinking ice cream and milk as a healthy drink since the early 1900’s, milkshakes did not get quite as creamy until Steven Poplawski Chocolate Milkshake Day 2017, Roadtrips R Usinvented the electric mixer in 1922.

From Chicago, the milkshake quickly spread across the country and by the 1930’s  was popular nationwide and a staple at malt shops. Since then the milkshake has never lost its appeal in the United States. However, it seems that more eatery’s than ever before are not only serving but highlighting them. The soda jerks of the 1930’s were at a disadvantage, their audience was a little too provincial to go for flavors like chocolate dipped bacon or sweet potato cashew. They did, however, have chocolate. If you want to try an up-to-date chocolate shake, head over to Max Brenner’s in New York City. This summer’s flavor is Chocolate Orange Julius. I would hesitate to bring Vincent with you, all of Brenner’s shakes are $7.95. However, this delicious shake will hit the spot for you and your friends.
