National Nachos Day 2017!

Today is National Nachos Day in the United States. I would have thought it would coincide with the Super Bowl, Final Four or some other sporting event, but I guess not. You really don’t need a holiday to eat Nachos, at least I don’t.

Brief Nachos History

Nachos are believed to have been created by Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya at the Victory Club in Piedras Negras, Mexico located just across the Texas border. During World War II, a group of Army wives spent a long day shopping and arrived at the restaurant after closing time. Ignacio headed to the kitchen and took what he had on hand to feed the hungry shoppers. He found some tortillas which he cut into triangles and fried. He then topped the chips with shredded cheese and baked them in the oven. He added some sliced Jalapeños and served them up. They were a big hit. When asked what he called this dish, he replied “Nachos” Especial.
News of this appetizer spread fast and Nachos became popular throughout Mexico and Texas. The waitress, Carmen Rocha, originally made this dish for guests in San Antonio before moving West and introducing them to customers at El Cholo Restaurant in Los Angeles in 1959. Carmen’s bold personality and love of making this dish herself quickly made Nachos popular with Hollywood’s Gringo’s.

Before owning his own restaurant Mr. Anaya went to work at Moderno Restaurant which used his original recipe for Nachos until it closed. Moderno sadly became a casualty of Mexico’s drug wars (2010) along with other border restaurants and taverns that had been in business for generations.
The “ballpark” version of Nachos consisting of a melted cheese sauce and tortilla chips was introduced in 1976 by the owner of Rico’s Products. During a Monday night football game, Howard Cosell became fond of this snack’s name and made a point of mentioning them in his broadcast. In the next few weeks, Nachos were introduced to a whole new audience.
