National Pizza with the Works Day (except anchovies)

National Pizza with the Works Day (except anchovies)

Quote for Today: Neapolitan’s have always had their fast food. It’s called pizza. Luciano De Crescenzo

Today is National Pizza with the Works Day (except anchovies). Americans really love their pizzas. We have a Pizza Festival Month, three Pizza Days and two weeks all dedicated to some form of this late night dorm room favorite.

Hold the Anchovies?

One thing that gets me is the exclusion of the anchovy. Anchovies are salty and a little overpowering, but hey, get them on the side, why not? We get everything else on the side. Give them a quick rinse under cold water if you like then try it on a slice. You might be surprised by a taste of Umami lingering around. If the anchovy is just too much for you, try some high-quality fish sauce on a slice. Now that I’ve said my peace about anchovies, here are a few places to get a great pizza with the works (Anchovies optional).

Top 5 Spots

Santoros Pizza: Seekonk, Massachusetts – Go for the meat lovers pizza with pepperoni, ground beef, sausage, salami, ham, and bacon. While you’re at it tell them to dump on everything from the super veggie as well.

De Lorenzo’s Tomato Pies: Robbinsville, New Jersey – These guys have been around for quite a while. I would suggest this, bring along three or four friends and order two large pies; one with everything but anchovies and one clam tomato pie. This will help you with the concept of sharing.

Alto Restaurant: Montreal, Canada – Serving hungry customers for over 2o years, Alto has a large menu serving Italian, Greek and Canadian classics. Brush up on your Parlez-vous and order the extra-large pizza “dressed.” Then tell them you want half as a meat lover with the other half vegetarian/Greek.

Big Pie in the Sky: Kennesaw, Georgia – The name says it all. When you ask for the biggest pie, you better mean it because you will soon be air-lifted a whopping 30” pie. I know today is Pizza with the Works (except anchovy) Day, but the Carnivore Challenge at this place is hard to pass up.

You and a friend get one large Carnivore Pizza with pepperoni, ground beef, Italian sausage, ham, and bacon. You then have one hour to eat the whole pie. If you clear your plates, you and your partner will receive $250. The downside is that it will cost you $50 if you don’t. Reservations for the challenge are a must and make sure you read the fine print in the rules.

Pizza Como: Bethlehem, Pennsylvania – Sharing space with a sports bar, this is another place that has a great variety of food other than pizza. Everyone that I have spoken too says that a number of toppings that you get on your pizza are immense. Your best bet is the German Pizza with Steak loaded up with veggies.
