Road Trips – Put Your Life in the Back and Go

The thing with pick-up trucks is: you can throw your life in the back of them – so there are few better vehicles to use to take on a road trip. Of course, there’s plenty of room in the back for a tent – or plenty of power to tow an Airstream behind you if that’s what you want – but you don’t just have to settle for throwing down a couple of blankets on the flatbed anymore.

Let’s take the Ford F150 for example, plenty of people do – it’s been the bestselling US car over the last 35 years – and they have been around for nearly 70 years. In fact, when you think of a pick-up truck, your mental image may be stuck in the 1940s. You may picture a small cab, poor shock absorbers, and a bench seat.

The pick-up has changed a lot since then – making it a lot more comfortable for a road trip. There have been thirteen generations of Ford F-150s, and in the eleventh generation (2004) they all got upgraded to having four doors. They’re no longer hard bench seats – depending on the model, you can have heated and cooled seats with a massage function. And a heated steering wheel (yep, I may have been enviously looking at a Ford F-150 Raptor with all the specs, so what?)

You can even lift the rear seats up and lay the front seats down almost flat. Instead of getting a broken back if you have to spend a night in the truck, it’s more like spending a night in a first-class plane cabin. The fact that there’s built-in Bluetooth and DVD players help. It means that if you are taking a road trip with kids in the back, there’s at least plenty to keep them entertained (although if they bug you too much, you’re not supposed to just throw them on the flatbed).

Get the Truck Out

Pick-ups have always been great for moving things about – but now they’re great for moving people about too. They’re versatile. If you want to take a road trip up to the mountains to go hiking, biking or kayaking – then there’s plenty of space in the back.  They will also be able to take on mountain roads (or even off-road with ease. If you’re seeing the country, there are places you might worry about going with a regular car – these are the kind of vehicles that tale on the Baja Run.

They’re also great vehicles where you can take your kid to college with all their stuff in the back, and then look around the country on the way back. It has all the comfort of a luxury sedan with all the practicality of a truck. There’s got to be a pay off right – the price of gas.

The new 2017 F-150 uses aluminum to weigh 750 pounds less and using the EcoBoost engines, the fuel efficiency of pick-ups is the best that it has ever been. With hybrids and electric pick-ups coming out, expect the cost to your wallet and mother Earth to go down every year.

Pickups and the USA Have U in Common

If you’re traveling across America, then doing it in a pickup is a great way to do it. It’s the automobile that built America, being the backbone of so many small and big businesses across the land. Especially in the middle of America, you’ll end up seeing almost as many pickups as any other vehicle. If you’re taking a road trip, you’ll fit right in. Plus, the extra height means that you can peer into people’s front yards as you drive past.

You also get to feel like you’re driving a real part of America as you’re driving through it in an F-150. Families buy Ford cars for generations for a reason – since the first Model T ran off the production line as the first mass-produced vehicle, they have been one of the accelerating forces behind America’s development.

The highways that you drive on probably wouldn’t exist in the way they do without the Ford Company’s history. Thinking about the wonder of the country and the achievements of our forefathers should be exactly the frame of mind you should be in for an American road trip.

The Flatbed of America

Whether it’s going from coast to coast, home to dorm, your house to a parent’s house at Thanksgiving or Christmas – a pickup is a great way to experience America, and now a much more comfortable and cost-effective way to do it.

Whatever the time of year, or the weather conditions – you’ll know that you can handle it in a modern pickup. Plus, if you want to color outside the lines and go off the beaten path – then there’s nothing stopping you. And, you know what else – they’re fun to drive. They have that power that makes you want to yell ‘Merica at the top of your lungs.

Motorbikes may offer more visceral fun, and something like a minivan may offer slightly more practicality if you’re on a family vacation – but if you want a real mix of fun with a healthy dollop of practicality thrown in, then you can’t really do any better than a pickup.
