The Brit’s love their sandwiches and take them very seriously. Although sandwiches in some form have been around since ancient times, the moniker sandwich did not come about until the 18th century. John Montagu, a British statesman, succeeded his grandfather in 1729 at the age of ten as the Earl of Sandwich. John was an avid gambler, not wanting to waste time, he would have his servants slap some meat between slices of bread so he could eat with one hand while having the second free for his cards.
