Lafcadio Hearn On this day in 1850 Lafcadio Hearn was born and named for one of the Greek Ionian Islands. His early life was somewhat tumultuous as the son of a British Surgeon Major and a Greek woman of noble lineage. Shortly after his birth he was abandoned by both parents and sent to live with his father’s family in Dublin Ireland. Both parents remarried and started new families while Lafacadio lived with his great aunt until he left for America at age nineteen. His mother who had four more children with a new husband was eventually committed to a mental asylum on the island of Corfu where she died in 1882.
